MALABO – On September 20th, 2014 The Oil & Gas Year Awards ceremony took place in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea. Held in cooperation between the Ministry of Mines, Industry and Energy of Equatorial Guinea, international law firm Centurion LLP, and The Oil & Gas Year, the awards are to celebrate outstanding contributions to the country’s oil and gas industry throughout the year. The awards single out both individuals and companies for their efforts to improve the country’s energy industry. The chief honor of the night was the ‘Woman of the Year’ award, which was presented to Mercedes Eworo Milam, Director General of Hydrocarbons for the Ministry of Mines, Industry and Energy for her outstanding work in ensuring the sustainable development of the country’s oil and gas sector and the inclusion of nationals in industry.

Winners on the night also included Hess Corporation as ‘Exploration and Production Company of the Year’. The award was to acknowledge the company’s aggressive multi-year drilling campaign that has resulted in offsetting a production drop of up to 30 percent from the company’s Equatoguinean assets, the Ceiba Field and Okume Complex. The ‘Upstream Development of the Year’ award went to Ophir Energy for its development plan for Block R, which includes a $3 billion FLNG project, the first of its kind in Africa. The ‘Service Company of the Year’ award was presented to Schlumberger for its role in the successful execution of several simultaneous drilling campaigns in the country in 2014 for major operating companies such as Marathon Oil, Noble Energy, Hess and ExxonMobil. ‘National Content Project of the Year’ was awarded to Marathon Oil for its milestone Alba B3 Compression Platform project. The project has set precedents in Equatorial Guinea for the level of participation of national companies in large-scale energy projects, with approximately 10 percent of the project’s total $650-million cost allocated to national companies. ‘Downstream Development of the Year’ was awarded to the project develop team of the Integrated Petrochemical Complex in Riaba, as well the partners in Blocks I and O, Noble Energy, Glencore, Atlas Petroleum, Osborne Resources and national oil company GEPetrol, who will supply the gas feedstock. The complex is the first step of the country’s Petrochemical Revolution of Equatorial Guinea (REPEGE) master plan. The ‘Excellence in Operations’ award went to William Wheeler for his role as Managing Director of Equatorial Guinea LNG (EG LNG). Under his leadership EG LNG has developed into one of the most efficient LNG plants in the world, recording one of the highest productivity rates of any LNG plant in operation in 2013.

The night also included speeches by H.E. Gabriel Obiang Lima, Minister of Mines, Industry and Energy of Equatorial Guinea, Centurion Law Firm CEO, NJ Ayuk, and Gilles Valentin, Managing Partner of The Oil & Gas Year. The event took place in Imagine Restaurant and the master of ceremonies was Agustin Okomo Mba.

EITI-GE Activities During the African Leadership Summit and Economic Forum of the Republic of Equatorial Guinea in Washington, DC

Equatorial Guinea is currently in the process of preparing to re-apply for admission, first as a candidate, and later, as a full member.

We are forming the National Commission and the debate with the civil society and the operating extraction companies in preparing the process is a fact.

There has been contact with the national committees in other countries such as Congo, United Kingdom, Cameroon, USA, and some organizations close to EITI such as the World Bank, which is part of its Board of Directors, and others such as the U.S. Department of State, and some governments representatives like Spain, Ghana, etc..

There’s a revolution happening in Africa, but it is not a military revolution that requires the commitment of American troops or global peacekeeping forces.

In the last several years, the world’s largest resource exploration companies, Marathon, Exxon Mobil, Noble Energy, and many more have laid the foundation for development and economic growth in many other aspects of the Equatorial Guinean economy. The growth of the Equatorial Guinean economy benefits more than just the business community in the country. It trickles down and is having a positive impact on the entire population in the form of improved infrastructure, healthcare, and education systems. With the essential infrastructure in place, President Obiang is working to transform more than just the economy of Equatorial Guinea.

Lima meets with Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudges

H.E. Gabriel Mbaga Obiang Lima, Minister of Mines, Industry and Energy of the Republic of Equatorial Guinea meet with Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge on Monday, August 4th, 2014.

The purpose of the meeting was to recognize the gradual development of important cultural and economic ties between the Republic of Equatorial Guinea and the United States of America’s institutions. During the meeting it was established that H.E. Obiang Lima, is more than happy to foster and exchange ideas with Fudge and the Congressional Black Caucus regarding Africa and Equatorial Guinea, with special focus on the business development opportunities in the Equatorial Guinea which may be relevant to a broad population in the United States and to the African American business community.

The Minister of Mines, Industry and Energy, H.E. Gabriel Mbaga Obiang Lima stated “The Ministry of Mines, Industry and Energy is more than willing to open the doors for any potential investor who is willing to develop the Country and contribute to our efforts of diversifying our economy. We want to develop all industries as we have the capacity and the willingness.”

In light of the foregoing, H.E. Gabriel Mbaga Obiang Lima has invited Congresswoman Fudge to come to the Republic of Equatorial Guinea on an official visit. It is H.E. Obiang Lima interest that Congresswomen Fudge or any other member of the Congressional Black Caucus visit the Country and see the dramatic developments of the Country.

On August 4th, 2014, Minister Gabriel MBEGA OBIANG LIMA of the Ministry of Mines, Industry and Energy participated in the POWER AFRICA DIASPORA FORUM organized by the AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF BLACK IN ENERGY (AABE).

The forum focused on the theme of “Strategies & Next Steps for Sustainable Energy Infrastructure Development in Africa” - Building on the U.S. - Africa Energy Ministerial –

The major themes that emerged from the recent U.S. - Africa Energy Ministerial held on June 3-6 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia included the need for a focus on transparency and rule of law in governance, the benefits of U.S. and multilateral financing tools, the role that a broad range of sustainable technologies could play in improving energy access, the expansion and deepening of the U.S. Government’s “Power Africa” initiative to add 10,000 megawatts of electricity and 20 million new connections in six select Sub-Saharan African countries. The forum also addressed the issues and opportunities associated with the Electrify Africa Act.

The Forum included panel presentations from Her Excellency Irene Nafuna Muloni, Minister of Energy in Uganda, Paula R. Jackson; AABE President & CEO, Hilda Pinnix-Ragland, V.P. Corp. Public Affairs, Duke Energy; AABE Director Robert Powell, PhD Professor of Architectural Engineering, NC A&T University, and Laura Asiala, PYXERA Global

H.E. MBAGA OBIANG LIMA, delivered a presentation regarding Equatorial Guinea’s fast tracking of investment over the course of the last few years, along with the country’s optimistic expectations for the future. “Over 95% of the Nation is connected to the grid and $2 billion has been invested in power infrastructure over the past three years. Equatorial Guinea is using clean energy to light up the Nation and we welcome Obama’s Initiative, because it’s the future of Africa”

His Excellency invited AABE to Equatorial Guinea to begin negotiations with the National Electrical Company; SEGESA, in an effort to reach a collaborative agreement to provide training, technical assistance, and any other support as needed.
